This course will be devoted to the exploration of the characteristics of teacher talk, learner language and patterns of classroom interaction. Against the backdrop of research on learner language, error analysis and classroom discourse (e.g. the DESI study), we will be tackling a wide range of practical problems teachers face in the EFL classroom such as the analysis of learner language and oral techniques for managing EFL classes. Moreover, we will develop a scheme for classroom observation and apply it in the analysis and evaluation of typical classroom exchanges. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, we will discuss the role the negotiation of meaning between teachers and students (and among the latter) plays in the students' acquisition of English as a foreign language, and try to draw conclusions from this regarding the practice of English language teaching.
