Constantine I (306-337) is the last Roman emperor who made ample use of coins as primary means of political communication. Indeed, his coinage is of key importance for understanding and interpreting his policy, political goals and his idea of rulership, in particular with regard to religion and Christianity. At the same time, his monetary reforms contributed to the stabilisation of the Roman economy. The class will discuss these and other questions with a steady focus on the numismatic evidence will be working with original coins. It will thus offer an introduction into late Roman numismatics and into the Constantinian age.
