The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a pillar of relative calm surrounded by sectarian and political unrest. In 2015 Jordan’s King, Abdullah II, said in a speech to the European parliament: “The future lies in unity and respect, not division and stereotypes”. Since the 1980s (and with increased intensity over the past decade), a number of intra-Muslim and interfaith initiatives have been emerging from Jordan which aim to promote understanding and facilitate communication amongst Muslims and between different faiths. This course will examine a number of these initiatives and consider Jordan’s role as a dialogue mediator, initiator and global player.
