TCP ENERGY – Three Campus Project on Energy Transition

The LMET Research Group, Münster/Karlsruhe (Germany)

This joint research project of LMET with the University of Abuja in Nigeria and the Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology in India brings together three types of energy transition settings on a global scale: a developed energy market (Germany), an emerging energy market (India) and a developing energy market (Nigeria). From a socio-technical point of view, Nigeria and Germany confront a cross-over problem that will be approached in the project’s research exchange: While Nigeria enjoys a stable energy supply of renewable resources but suffers from a fragmented energy grid, Germany’s developed grid confronts considerable problems with renewable resource stability. This reciprocal outlay is an ideal research setting for the KIT and the Gujarat Insitute, especially for testing their own data in the Nigerian setting, whereas the Nigerian research group is simulating the country’s energy futures program in the technical environment of Energy Lab 2.0. The LMET group will also focus on the challenges of collaborative modelling across national energy policies and their techno-social settings.
The initial meeting of the tripartite collaboration took place in Münster in June 2018 where a Memorandum of Understanding has been concluded in the presence of the ambassador of Nigeria and the rector of the University of Münster. The project has acquired additional funding by The World Bank, concerning the development of the Abuja Energy Campus.
