Am 10. August diesen Jahres verstarb völlig unerwartet Brian L. Levy, einer der zentralen aktiven Mitglieder der Société Internationale Renardienne, ein Freund, eine Seele der Gesellschaft. Brian Levy, notre éminent collègue, notre cher ami, nous a subitement quittés en août 2004. Il nous est à tous pénible de le croire, tant est grande notre affliction.      Avec la disparition de Brian Levy, la Société Internationale Renardienne a perdu l’un de ses membres les plus importants et les plus actifs. Sa contribution avec M. Paul Wackers à la publication de Reinardus était considérable et c’est grâce à eux que nous pouvions recevoir si régulièrement le numéro de notre revue.      Le souvenir du 14e Colloque de notre Société, qu’il a organisé avec grand succès en 2001 à l’Université de Hull, son université, reste frais et vivace dans nos mémoires.      Comment imaginer la Société Internationale Renardienne privée de celui qui était un animateur dynamique et respecté? On ne saurait trop insisiter sur son immense contribution à notre Société pour qui la perte de cet irremplaçable collaborateur est bien cruelle.      Au nom de tous les membres de la Société Internationale Renardienne, et avec une profonde tristesse, je tiens à m’associer à la douleur de ceux qui lui étaient chers et à témoigner à sa famille mes plus vifs sentiments de sympathie. Prof. Noboru Harano Président de la Société Internationale Renardienne Professeur à l'Université de Hiroshima       Brian first appeared among us at the International Reynardian Society’s meeting in Evreux in 1981 and he remained an enthusiastically faithful member to the end. Only five years after Evreux he played the role of principal organiser and guiding spirit for our Durham colloquium, and just three years ago played the same role again for the Hull colloquium. He read and ‘performed’ a spell-binding paper at each and every meeting he attended, delighting us with his smile, with his witty, engaging, lively, often exuberant deliveries. Rarely has such scholarship been so happily married to such good humour! Of course his usual subject-matter, the fabliaux, was full of comic traits, but these were wonderfully brought out, enhanced and communicated by his joyful personality, always in evidence both on and off the podium. Even his non-fabliau papers (e.g., the one on the Bayeux Tapestry) were lifted by his good humour and great presence at the lectern. And what a joy it was to be his neighbour at table, to share a seat with him on our excursions, to be his companion anywhere at any time! It was at Spa (1985) where, to a largely sceptical business meeting, I proposed that the Society should publish its own Yearbook. At the end of that meeting Brian, together with Paul Wackers, came to see me and offer their support for this proposal. We all know the result, what a success he and Paul have made of ‘Reinardus’. This Yearbook, our Society’s flagship, has taken its place among internationally reputable journals, the fruit of that extraordinary strength which has grown out of the Society’s warmth, informality and good will, qualities epitomised by Brian.
