Political Theology and Political Theatre — A Seductive Alliance?
Herzliche Einladung!
Anmeldung per Email an: christian.kern@uni-muenster.de. Der Workshop findet statt im Rahmen der am Lehrstuhl für Pastoraltheologie ansässigen DFG Netzwerks „Postsecular Performances“ (Projektnr. 545972161). Sprache: Deutsch und Englisch.

Abstract Keynote Vincent Lloyd
Years before the emergence of Black theology as an academic field interrogating and challenging Christian doctrine, an even more radical move was made in the theater. In a pair of plays, “The Baptism” (1964) and “Black Mass” (1967), the African American playwright Amiri Baraka brought Christian ritual onto the stage, challenges theological assumptions about ritual meaning, and probes the way ritual, race, and Christian doctrine are entangled. The preeminent avant-garde Black dramatist of the second half of the twentieth-century, Baraka integrated music, immersive experience, and experimental form. Despite the deep influence of the Christian tradition on his literary form – his 1965 autobiographical novel was structured as a retelling of the Divine Comedy – neither scholars of performance nor scholars of theology pay much attention to Baraka in relation to that tradition. Taking Baraka as a case study, I explore what we can learn from reading the theology in performance and from reading the performance in theology – and the prospects for a framework of post-secular performance that could speak to both disciplines.
