Dutch Linguistics

Objective

Specializing allows students to focus their studies on one of the linguistic disciplines. Dutch Linguistics is one of the specialization options. The module builds on the knowledge acquired in the compulsory modules and is complemented by elective courses and the practice module. The master's thesis is written in the subject area of the specialization module.

Course content

The courses extend the knowledge of descriptive, regional, social, and functional aspects of the Dutch language from a modern and/or historical perspective and invite in-depth reflections.

Learning Outcomes

Students will have become familiar with the scientific analysis of phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic structures of the standard Dutch language, especially in contrast to German. They will be able to deal with linguistic literature in a reflective way and to distinguish between the most important theories and methods within a specific field of research. In addition, they will be able to independently conduct a small-scale empirical research project and report on this project in writing according to scientific standards. They will be familiar with the existence, use, distribution, and function of non-standard language varieties and with non-standard language variety research.
