Abstract

The research project outlined here combines theology with ethnographic methodology. Three locations in a secular city were explored as starting points for theology by means of participatory observation. The objective was to test a grounded theology that maintains the possibility of discovering traces and representations of God amid a secular, contemporary city. Urban space is particularly suitable for such an exploration. Anyone who practices theology in the city must expect surprises and irritations, which can put established theories and convictions into perspective. In this paper, three spotlights illuminate the chances and challenges of such a theological approach: at the largest cemetery in Europe, at a punk festival on the Reeperbahn, and at Hamburg's main train station.
