Die Neubelebung der Praktischen Theologie in den USA in den 1980er-Jahren– eine themenzentrierte Analyse

Abstract

Ein ökumenischer und interdisziplinärer Zirkel um die Chicagoer Theologen David Tracy und Don
S. Browning setzte Anfang der 1980er-Jahre einen Impuls zur methodischen und thematischen Erneuerung
der Praktischen Theologie in den USA. Die entstehende Debatte diskutierte teils fundamentaltheologisch,
teils praxisorientiert den Öffentlichkeitsbezug der theologischen Disziplinen und die Bedeutung
einer kritisch-korrelativen Hermeneutik für die Praktische Theologie. Dabei gelangten die
beteiligten Autorinnen und Autoren zu Fragen nach der Bildsamkeit theologischer Reflexion und der
Gestaltung situationsadäquater Bildungsangebote. Der Aufsatz stellt diesen thematischen Prospekt
vor und illustriert am Beispiel der Zielsetzungen religiöser Bildung bei Browning, wie die Anliegen von
öffentlicher Gesprächsfähigkeit, hermeneutischer Redlichkeit und pädagogischem Wirken miteinander
verknüpft sind.
In the early 1980s, an ecumenical and interdisciplinary group of theologians around David Tracy and
Don S. Browning initiated a methodological and thematic reorientation of Practical Theology in the
U. S. In a vigorous debate, they investigated the connection to the public and the obligations of the
theological disciplines as well as a critical correlational model of Practical Theology. These discussions,
both theoretical and practical, gave rise to questions concerning the formational quality of theological
reflection and the contextually appropriate design of theological education. The article introduces the
reader to this set of issues. Taking as an example the goals of religious education according to Browning,
it illustrates how these three objectives of this strand of Practical Theology are interwoven: to be
publicly articulate, hermeneutically sound and educationally effective.
