Tuesday, 15 August 2023, 18:30 – 20:00 h: Guided walking tour of the historic city center of Münster

The city center of Münster hosts a variety of architectural and historical treasures. Main sights include the St. Paulus-Dom (St. Paul's Cathedral), built in the 13th century in a mixture of late Romanesque and early Gothic styles, the Prinzipalmarkt (main market place) with the Gothic style Rathaus (city hall) built in the 14th century and the Lambertikirche (St. Lambert's Church) from 1375. The city hall houses the Friedenssaal (hall of peace) where the Peace of Westphalia was signed in 1648, putting an end to the Thirty Years’ War that had devastated large parts of Europe in the 17th century. On Tuesday evening you have the occasion to get an impression and detailed information on the historic city center of Münster in a guided walking tour of about 90 minutes. Meeting point is at the Domplatz, in front of the LWL museum for art and culture.

Wednesday, 16 August 2023, 13:30 – 18:00 h: Conference Excursion

The region around Münster - called Münsterland - is famous for its large number of moated castles and palaces. The conference excursion brings us to two quite different types of these castles: Burg Vischering and Schloss Nordkirchen. The first documentary evidence of Burg Vischering dates back to the year 1271, it was extended in the renaissance style after a big fire in 1521. It is often seen as the ideal model of a Münsterland moated castle. With its round main castle building in the midst of the body of water it is an architectural monument of picturesque unity. Schloss Nordkirchen is a baroque palace built between 1703 and 1734 at the place of a former moated castle. It is surrounded by a moat-like canal and located in a large park with baroque gardens. Between the visits of the two castles a coffee break will be held at a traditional countryside inn. Departure for the excursion is at 13:30 h from the bus stop Körnerstraße (from the conference site turn left).
