Statement: A call for strengthening democratic values and the rule of law

The University of Münster supports the unequivocal position of the German Rectors’ Conference

In times of increasing populism, openly propagated hostility to constitutional order and myriad forms of discrimination, the University of Münster is profoundly committed to the fundamental values of democracy. The University management and Senate stand behind the statement issued by the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK): “Liberal democracy and the rule of law are the immovable pillars of our country and its institutions. They are also an essential prerequisite for the existence of a competitive and internationally compatible German higher education system.”

Mutual respect, internationality and a diversity of perspectives: The University of Münster is a place where students, researchers and employees from around the world and from many different walks of life can study and work. “Teaching and research thrive on the ability to openly share opinions and differing points of view. Universities offer freedom and a protected space where one can also engage in critical discussion,” explained University Rector Prof Dr Johannes Wessels. “In this spirit, we hold fast to the principles expressed in the University statutes, our code of conduct and our mission statement on diversity. We pledge to encounter one another with openness and tolerance and to assume social responsibility.”

Anchored in the city of the Westphalian Peace, the University of Münster strongly encourages its members and friends throughout the region to stand up for fundamental democratic values and exercise the rights and obligations that they entail. “As part of the democratic community, we as a university send a clear signal condemning antidemocratic efforts and contempt for humanity in every form,” declared Johannes Wessels.
