Ph.D. project:
Priests and Politics.
The Attitudes of the Jesuits in Chile from 1964 to 1983
The 31st General Congregation of the Society of Jesus was held in 1965-1966 under the influence of the Second Vatican Council, which marked the beginning of a sweeping change of the largest Catholic order. A change towards a stronger commitment to social justice accompanied the initiated reforms. In many Jesuit provinces, centres for social research and social action had already been founded, their major function being to change both the people’s mind-set and social structures in terms of social justice. The Chilean Centro Bellarmino, in which the Jesuit research centre was pooled together with the Jesuit magazine »Mensaje«, became well-known internationally. The bishops in Chile welcomed the Jesuits’ research work and consulted the specialists of the Centro Bellarmino, who were skilled in social and economical science.
The dissertation’s point of origin is the Catholic Church’s stance on the respective governments in Chile between 1964 and 1990, that is, the Christian Democratic government of Eduardo Frei, the Socialist government of Salvador Allende and the military government of Augusto Pinochet. What are the reasons for the Church’s positions? If the Catholic Church is understood to be a political player, however, its positioning and action can only be insufficiently explained by exclusively examining the topmost hierarchical level.
Therefore, the political positions of the Jesuit order, which was regarded as the politically most important order of the Catholic Church, will be identified in order to correlate them with the positions of the bishops. In addition, the interactions of the different ecclesiastic institutions will be considered to arrive at a sophisticated understanding of the Church as a player. On the one hand, the Church’s institutional structures will have to be focussed on, and on the other hand, the networks of the clerics – also the informal ones – will have to be studied. The hierarchical organisation, what the Catholic Church like no other institution is known for, will be examined in this perspective. In doing so, the notions of authority and obedience in their post-conciliary change will be accounted for.
In order to be able to understand the views and actions of the Jesuits in Chile, these must be seen in the context of the change in the Society of Jesus after the Second Vatican Council and the order’s 31st General Congregation, respectively. Therefore, the development of the social apostolate of the order under Superior General Pedro Arrupe will be retraced and the Jesuit’s self-perception in regards to their social role will be elaborated.
