Ph.d. Project:
European Muslim Religiosity on the Internet
“There exists only one Islam, which determines each Muslimʼs life.” This statement from a Muslim university student posted on a German online-discussion group articulates a singular form of Islam which opposes the European publicʼs desire for a particular, namely a liberal, Euro-Islam. The same internet forum, however, provides numerous perspectives on Islam by other European students of Muslim belief that challenge this postulated uniformity of Islam. In fact, different types of Muslim religiosity and identity have evolved and are not only articulated but also negotiated online. Many of these are a product resulting from the interactions between secular societies and Muslim minorities in Europe. These modern types of religiosity range from expressions of ʽprotestantʼ, and ʽindividualisticʼ to ʽsecular-culturalʼ Islam. Yet, few attempts have been made to elucidate the dynamics of religious identity formation online in order to bring the average European Muslim into focus.
In this project, I argue that research on the question of how European Muslims use the internet is crucial for the understanding of the contemporary debate of Islam in Europe. The internet, which is a product and instrument of modernity itself, constitutes a space that young European Muslims utilize to discuss their identity and religiosity. Online-forums are used by some of these students to challenge the religious authority of clerical Islam through constructing their own ʽpureʼ alternative of Islam; others use them to develop genuine secular forms of religiosity. Such inner-Islamic online debates mirror contemporary sociological debates pertaining to the ʽReturn of the Godsʼ as a challenge to secular modernity in Europe.
Within a case study focusing on Muslim university studentsʼ online forums from Germany and England, I examine and contextualize online interaction, especially in relation to the use of religion as a resource for the construction of Muslim identity in contemporary European society.
