Research Area 4 “Generic techniques”

All partners contribute their glyco-techniques to Research Area 4 “Generic techniques” to make the infrastructure and expertise of all MCGS groups available to all MCGS projects. Organic synthesis of oligosaccharides are performed by Balamurugan and Ramu Sridhar, while biosynthesis using enzymes is contributed by Appa Rao and Moerschbacher. The entire repertoire of classical carbohydrate analytical tools is available and continuously further developed in the Hensel group. Mass spectrometry of oligo- and polysaccharides pioneered by Peter-Katalinic is being further improved by Mormann, supported by Hippler and Moerschbacher. Physico-chemical techniques to analyse the solution properties of polysaccharides are applied by Goycoolea, who also contributes his expertise in nanobiotechnology, and to study carbohydrate-protein interactions by Swamy and Müthing. Lectins to be used as tools for both purification and characterization of glycans and glyco-conjugates are being studied in detail by Siva Kumar and Swamy. Bioassays to quantify biological activities of glycans are broadly contributed by Appa Rao, Götte, Goycoolea, Grobe, Hensel, Moerschbacher, Niyaz, Seidler, Suresh. Lalitha and Ulaganathan as well as Singh contribute their bioinformatic expertise. The one emerging crucial technology for analyzing carbohydrate-protein interactions which we are missing in our consortium due to the early exit of Bindila, are glyco-array technologies, for which we have made collaborative arrangements for the future with several leading experts from Academia (Feizi, Imperial College London; Seeberger, MPI Potsdam-Golm) and Industry (Weigle, scienion AG, Berlin).
