As a result of colonial expansion in past centuries, the English language is spoken all over the world today. In this course, we will explore a wide range of varieties of English, including first-language varieties spoken and written in the United Kingdom, Ireland, North America, and in the Southern Hemisphere, second-language varieties spoken and written in Africa and South(-East) Asia, as well as pidgins and creoles. In more detail, we will look at features on the levels of phonology, morpho-syntax, and the lexicon. Apart from discussing various ways of conceptualizing the English language, this class will focus on the individual nature of the varieties discussed by setting them within their historical and social contexts.
