NRW Graduate Schools Meet His Holiness, the 14. Dalai Lama

The NRW Graduate Schools have invited His Holiness the Dalai Lama to the University of Münster in September 2007. He met with students from the seven NRW Graduate Schools to discuss about "Universal Responsibility in Science and Society". His Holiness also gave a public lecture on this topic on 21. The Dalai Lama has a long record of encounters with scientists. He meets regularly with endowed personalities in science to discuss about the relationship between science and religion. He organizes the Mind and Life conference every two years in Dharamsala, and he has closed many friendships with scientists. His book The Universe in a Single Atom is a remarkable and unique monograph, written by a religious leader, which tries "to examine two important human disciplines for the purpose of developing a more holistic and integrated way of understanding the world around us". The book is composed of topics such as particle and astrophysics, evolution, neurosciences and human consciousness.

His enduring effort to introduce scientific education in Buddhist monasteries, to motivate scientist to think beyond borders, in combination with a deep belief in scientific methodology, has persuaded the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy of the University of Münster to honor His Holiness, the 14. Dalai Lama, with the Doctor Honoris Causa in Natural Sciences. The ceremony took place on 20. September 2007 at Münster with invited guests.
