Instruction for secure email receipt with Thunderbird
Preliminary remark
This instruction will show you how to configure Mozilla Thunderbird so that you are secure against any unauthorized reading of passwords and emails. We assume that you are already checking your university emails via Thunderbird/Mozilla. Only the checking of the emails will be secured. The sending remains unsecured.
Configuration
In order to make the connection secure you must change the settings of your university email account. First start your email program. In the menu "Extras" you will find the item "Accounts". After you have clicked on this item, you will see a window as shown in the image. In the left drop-down menu choose the "Server-settings" of your university email account. Now change the settings in the right part of the window under "Security and authentication" according to the image on TLS. The secure authentication must be deactivated as our server does not support it.
- Mozilla/Thunderbird configuration:
You can also choose „SSL“ as encryption method instead of "TLS". Then the port number will automatically change to 995. This is exactly the right setting for our server.
Please note:
If you check your emails via IMAP, you must choose SSL as encryption method, as the IMAP server does not support TLS.
