The first PhD thesis coming out of the TRANS SUSTAIN project was successfully defended by Janina Grabs at the University of Münster’s Institute of Political Science. Her thesis, titled “The effectiveness of market-driven regulatory sustainability governance. Assessing the design of private sustainability standards and their impacts on Latin American coffee farmers’ production practices”, combines quantitative impact evaluation estimations with qualitative institutional analysis to assess the effectiveness of market-driven regulatory governance through certification schemes in improving socially and environmentally sustainable practices of Latin American coffee farmers. It received the highest grade, “summa cum laude”, by her supervisors Prof. Dr. Thomas Dietz and Prof. Dr. Graeme Auld from Carleton University.
