Osterweiterung der Europäischen Union (Eastward Enlargement of the European Union)
The enlargement
of the
European Union towards the Eastern Countries of Europe has a clear perspective to be realized within
the next
few years. Many countries in Central and Eastern Europe expressed their desire to join the world's
largest
common market soon after the collapse of the communist regimes in the early 1990s. After more than
a decade of
Transformation and catching-up to the present members of the EU the applicant countries now comply
with
many of the political and economic requirements laid down at the Copenhagen summit in 1993.
Because of such
a clear direction it is necessary and advisable to take a close look at the chances and the risks of the
enlargement for the old member countries as well as for the new ones. The scope for a research
agenda needs to
consider the outcomes of the foundation of the Common Market in 1993 within the current EU-area
as well as the
analysis of the various economic and political developments of the new member countries during the
transformation process. The latter must account for the direct and indirect effect of the prospective
EU-membership on the actual economic and political conditions in the new member countries (e.g. the
obligation
to adopt and implement the acquis communautaire). Additionally research also has to challenge the
question of
the appropriate currency regime during the run-up to EMU as well as the consequences for the future
development of the European Monetary Union after enlargement.
