Diffusion in metals

A review about diffusion in metals has been completed and published as a chapter in a book on "Diffusion in Condensed Matter."

Diffusion of Pd and Ir in aluminium single crystals has been studied as a function of temperature using the radiotracer sectioning technique. Pd diffuses significantly slower than Al with a high activation enthalpy and a high pre-exponential factor. The heavy transition metal Ir diffuses slightly faster than Al self-diffusion and its activation parameters are quite normal.

Recent progress from our laboratory which concerns diffusion in various intermetallic phases has been summarized. Relevant factors which influence diffusion such as crystal structure, state of order, temperature, composition, and some consequences for the atomic mechanisms of diffusion have been discussed.
