The 'Edelbach': Ecological research of a brook with respect to the EU - Water Framework Directive - Comparison with former data
The "Edelbach" rises in Münster and can be described as a small brook flowing mainly straightened in the north-east of the city. It runs mostly past agriculturally used areas or through petite woods before opening out into the river "Werse". In this bachelor thesis my research will focus on this brook and its current ecological status, especially as the European Union brought up its Water Framework Directive in 2000 claiming a "good status" of all watercourses until 2015. I will check the present status of the "Edelbach" mainly by basing my research on analysing macrozoobenthos. Checking the population of different macroinverterbrates is very meaningful as these organisms react, with reference to the consistancy of their biocenosis, quite sensitively to anthropogenic-caused disturbances so that a capacious inspection of the brook is possible, e.g. by using the saproby system. In order to complete my work I will compare my obtained data with results of former ecological studies on the "Edelbach" from 1989 and 1994 with the aim of pointing out possible changes.
