Honorary doctorate from the University of Münster and four other universities
Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, Augsburg Peace Prize, honorary citizen of the city of Espelkamp, Prize of the Bible and Culture Foundation
The Protestant Military Chaplaincy in Germany awards the Hermann Kunst Medal for services to the pastoral care of soldiers.
