PhD Project: Functionalization of Unactivated Aldehydes by NHC Catalyzed Redox Activation and Mechanistic Studies

Abstract of Research Project

The reactions of aldehydes with NHCs (Nucleophilic Heterocyclic Carbenes) have been intensively investigated. These reactions proceed via enol type intermediates the so called Breslow intermediates. Oxidation using external organic oxidants provides acylazoliums, which can be used as electrophiles. The aim of the thesis is to test the versatility of such acylazoliums in organic synthesis. Structural and mechanistic investigations are on the agenda. Finally in situ generated acylazoliums will be used to conduct the complex cascade reactions.
