PhD Project: Synthesis, Structure and Properties of Pnictides and Pnictide-Oxides

Abstract of Research Project

Pnictides and pnictide-oxides are building a large and interesting class of compounds. Especially there is only little known about pnictide-oxides. For a long time, pnictide-oxides have been regarded as pnictides neglecting the oxygen. Besides the structure we are interested in the characterization of the properties of these compounds which is indeed an unexplored field. We expect many interesting electrical, optical and magnetic properties like semiconductivity or antiferromagnetism.

In the center of interest of my research are quaternary lanthanide (Ln)-transition metal (T)-pnictide (Pn)-oxides and Ln-T-Pn pnictides. Especially the quaternary equiatomic lanthanide-transition metal-pnictide-oxides (LnTPnO) are offering a huge and varying class of compounds.

Besides the structure determination based on x-ray data we wish to determine the magnetic and electrical properties. Furthermore there are several spectroscopic methods helping us to get a deeper insight in these compounds: Mößbauer spectroscopy and, in cooperation with the research group of Professor Eckert, solid state NMR and Raman-spectroscopy. UV/Vis/NIR-spectra of the LnZnPnO pnictide oxides are of peculiar interest due to their bright colours and shall be measured with the help of Professor Glaum at the University of Bonn.
