Abstract of Research Project

Organic Chemistry is a field of enormous complexity. The fact, which makes it such a fascinating field to pursue is that it is still largely unexplored. One of the greatest challenges in organic chemistry is the synthesis of physiologically active compounds, so that the ever increasing demand for selective synthetic drugs is met.

Introduction of fluorine substituent into a bioactive compound is a powerful tool to enhance its pharmacological activity as shown by many examples. Several widely used synthetic drugs contain fluorine as a substituent, viz, Ciprofloxacin, Norfloxacin, Efavirenz, Pantoprazole, etc. Introduction of a fluorine atom changes the reactivity and the biological activity of a molecule. Though fluorine is isosteric to the hydroxyl group, fluorinated compounds do not undergo the same metabolic processes. Also, the lipophilicity of a molecule can be enhanced so that the drug easily passes the blood-brain barrier.

The main aim of my research project is to selectively introduce the 18F isotope into biologically relevant compounds, so that they are in turn used for evaluation of a variety of human diseases by Positron Emission Tomography (PET Imaging). The above is a diagnostic examination that involves the acquisition of physiologic images based on the detection of radiation from the emission of positrons from the administered 18F labelled substance.
