GNEL/ASNEL exhibition

The history of ASNEL conferences and ASNEL publications will come to life in an exhibition of posters, photographs, programmes, and books. The exhibits will not only span twenty years of ASNEL existence; several of the important early conferences and book publications that have lead up to the foundation of ASNEL will also be represented. We're happy to announce that Sridhar Rajeswaran has accepted our invitation to read at ASNEL 2009. Sridhar Rajeswaran is Professor and Head, Department of English, K.S.K.V. University of Kachchh, Bhuj, India. His areas of critical concern are the poetry of W.B. Yeats and the Irish Women Revolutionaries, Modern Indian Drama in English, Tamil Cinema and Race-Class-Caste-Gender Issues. He is also a creative writer and his first collection of poems has been published in 2008. His plays have been presented over the All India Radio and have been published in a book form in 2008.

School Teaching Forum

A one-day teacher training session will be held on Friday, 22 May 2009. Eight workshops as well as a roundtable discussion offer the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences on the teaching of postcolonial/transcultural studies in secondary schools. The School teaching forum addresses teachers, teacher educators as well as future teachers and will present new approaches and methods on the subject. Round table: Clearing new spaces

Wasafiri: The Magazine of International Contemporary Writing is turning 25 this year. To mark this anniversary, Wasafiri and ASNEL are putting on a round table called "Clearing new spaces" at the ASNEL conference in Münster.
Guest editors of Wasafiri, Suman Gupta, Bryan Cheyette and Bernardine Evaristo discuss the raison d’être behind creating a special issue of the magazine and reflect on how to forge new connections in Chinese, Jewish/Postcolonial, African-European and Black British writing. The discussion is to be chaired by the Founding Editor of the magazine, Susheila Nasta. This will be followed by readings from international writers Bernardine Evaristo, Tomáš Zmeškal and Samir El-youssef.

It’s a pleasure for us to announce that Tomáš Zmeškal will be at our conference to read from his literary work. Born in Prague of Czech-Congolese parentage, he published his writing in numerous samizdat publications in the mid-1980s. In 1987 he moved to London where, among other things, he studied English Literature. In 1999 he moved back to Prague, where he works as a translator and English teacher. We’re happy to announce that Bernardine Evaristo has accepted our invitation to read at ASNEL 2009. Bernardine Evaristo was born in London to an English mother and Nigerian father. She has fused poetry with fiction in two novels-in-verse, Lara (1997, 2009) and The Emperor’s Babe (2001) as well as a novel-with-verse, Soul Tourist (2005). She co-edited, with Maggie Gee, the Granta/British Council anthology NW15 in 2007. Her latest novel, Blonde Roots (2008), is an imaginative reversal of the transatlantic slave trade. ASNEL conferences feature academic papers as well as readings by poets and novelists. We're glad to announce that Samir El-youssef has accepted our invitation to read at ASNEL 2009. Samir El-youssef was born in Rashidia, a Palestinian refugee camp in South Lebanon and has been living in London since 1990. He is the author of six books including novels, short stories and essays; he writes in Arabic and English. His novel The Illusion of Return (2007) has received wide acclaim; his collection of stories Gaza Blues ( 2004), co-authored with the Israeli writer Etgar Keret has been translated into several languages. Theatre performance: s/w remix

As part of the conference's cultural programme, delegates are invited to attend a performance of the young theatre company "Cactus." Their play "s/w remix" explores aspects of identity and stereotyping in a multicultural and multiracial German society.
