Historical background

The Fürstenberghaus is named after Franz (Friedrich Wilhelm) von Fürstenberg, founder and first chancellor of the University of Münster. While there were several earlier attempts to found a university in Münster, he finally put this idea into practice by using money of two formerly dissolved convents and created the University of Münster in 1780. While there were only four faculties in the beginning – law, medicine, theology and philosophy – the university nowadays consists of 15 departments with over 120 fields of study and is thus the fifth largest university in Germany. During the semester, the Fürstenberghaus usually hosts students of philosophy or history – in September, we will be passing the statue of Franz von Fürstenberg and be reminded of the university’s and the city’s history.
