Abstract

The history of the Catholic youth ministry is more than the story of theological approaches and official documents. From the perspective of Church history, it is important to relate them to the obstinacy and self-willed behaviour („Eigensinn“, a term framed by German historian Alf Lüdtke) of the youth. Young people can follow official instructions, but they can also refuse or – a third option – adapt them to their own needs. This juvenile „Eigensinn“ – the topic of the article – is supported by two examples: The first is the formation of the Catholic sports association „Deutsche Jugendkraft“ in the late Kaiserreich, the second the developments in youth ministry during the 1920s and 1930s, often described with the contradictory terms „Jugendpflege“ (youth minstry led by adults) and „Jugendführung“ ( youth ministry involving young people in leadership). The article concludes with a look at the developments after Vatican II.
