Stationary phases for HPLC
As petroleum and related products are the most complex known matrices there are special requirements to the HPLC stationary phases intended to separate these samples. In our lab we have been developing several stationary phases for the separation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polyaromatic sulfur heterocycles (PASHs). Many of them are metal ion based ligand exchange chromatography columns.
With the use of our phases it is for example possible to isolate PAHs or PASHs out of complex matrices and further separate the aromatic compounds according to their double bond equivalent, i.e. the size of the aromatic system.
