The Institute of Animal Physiology consists of four sections that cooperate in research and teaching. These groups focus on the areas of molecular physiology (Prof. Dr. E. Liebau), morphogenesis of tubular organs (Prof. Dr. S. Luschnig), electrophysiology and molecular medicine (Prof. Dr. WM Weber) and metabolic physiology (PD Dr. B. Zeis). The research fields covered range from the analysis of molecular and cellular functions to the physiology of whole animals in various systems, including nematodes, insects, crustaceans, amphibians as well as humans. The Institute of Animal Physiology maintains facilities for animal husbandry, including freshwater and saltwater aquariums. The institute also runs a marine station for research and teaching at Carolinensiel on the North Sea.
