About AMMAP
The Amman Archaeological Project (ammap) is dedicated to exploring and preserving the heritage of the ancient Ammonite capital, Rabbot-Ammon—today’s Amman Citadel—and its hinterland. Led by Professor Katharina Schmidt, ammap is a collaborative effort involving four institutions: the University of Münster, the German Archaeological Institute, the German Protestant Institute of Archaeology, and the Department of Antiquities of Jordan. This multi-year project encompasses a range of specialized subprojects, each led by specific experts. A primary focus is the resumed excavation of the Citadel’s lower terrace to uncover evidence of the Ammonite royal residence. Additional subprojects include stylistic and iconographic studies of the Ammonite stone sculpture, a PhD project centered on "elite" burials, and a hinterland survey investigating the monumental towers, or rujm, which are emblematic of the region’s Iron Age landscape.
