Settings for e-mail clients
If you wish to access your e-mail by using client software and not through our webmail interface perMail, the required settings can be found here. Manuals for popular e-mail clients can be found under the category step-by-step manuals.
Incoming (server for incoming e-mails)
In order to fetch your e-mails with an e-mail client, you can choose between two methods of access. The ZIV recommends the use of the modern Internet Mail Access Protocol (IMAP). It enables you to freely move your messages between your inbox, folders on the central server and folders on your own PC. The older Post Office Protocol (POP) only allows downloading incoming e-mails to your own PC.

(In many e-mail clients, the settings marked with an asterisk (*) cannot be adjusted when using the e-mail account wizard for adding a new e-mail account, but have to be adjusted later under your account.)
(Please note: When using POP, do not configure your e-mail client to leave a copy of messages on the server! You would not only overload your inbox, but also risk duplicating e-mails or deleting unread messages. This is a general POP3 problem.)
Outgoing (server for outgoing e-mails)
In order to send e-mails, we recommend using our secure SMTP server. It can be accessed within the university network as well as from all over the world. The alternative server mail can only be accessed within the university network and should only be used in exceptional cases.
| Recommended method | Alternative | |

| Server name | secmail.uni-muenster.de | mail.uni-muenster.de |
| Port number* | 587 oder 25 | 25 |

| Advanced setting* | Server requires authentication | none |
| Login name* | your userID | do not enter |
| Password* | your standard password | do not enter |
Many Internet service provider block port 25; alternatively, you can use port 587 when using SECMAIL. This does not hold for users of Outlook 2003 and earlier: Those can only activate TLS encryption by enabling SSL encryption and usage of port 25.
Our secure SMTP server checks the sender address: Only userID@uni-muenster.de and email_alias@uni-muenster.de may be used as sender address.
Please note that the maximum size of an e-mail must not exceed 25 MB. If you wish to send larger files, please use our standard webmail interface perMail. It can be used for attachments up to ca. 500 MB. If you wish to receive large files, please make the sender aware of our service BigMail.
Important notice: The size of the incoming mailbox must not exceed 1.5 GB due to technical reasons. Otherwise incoming mail will be rejected as undeliverable. Apart from that there are no further limitations on mailbox sizes.
