Magmatic and metamorphic petrology of a fossil subduction zone on Syros, Greece
The island of Syros in the Cyclades is one of the few examples in Europe where a
fossil subduction zone is well exposed. Cretaceous to Eocene peak metamorphic
conditions reached 500°C at about 1.5 GPa total pressure. The aim of the
project is to identify the nature of the protoliths, unravel possible primary
lithostratigraphic relationships, and to date emplacement and metamorphic overprint
ages. The long-term project involves extensive field work combined with U/Pb, Rb/Sr
and Ar/Ar dating of magmatic and metamorphic minerals. Work is being carried out in
cooperation with John Schumacher (Bristol University), Igor Villa (University of
Bern), and Allan Kennedy (Curtin University, Australia). The project presently
supports three diploma and one Ph.D theses at the University of Münster.
