The study of QCD matter in high energy heavy-ion collisions in the LHC era

Creating on earth matter as it should have existed up to a few microseconds in the life of our expanding Universe, the unprecedented energy provided by the LHC allows to probe deconfined quark and gluon matter at the highest energy densities attainable in laboratory. I will review the achievements and challenges of the study of QCD matter produced in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions, with focus on the latest results at the LHC.
