Applying to the Graduate School of Communication Science

To be considered for admission to the doctoral program, applicants must have a Magister, Diplom, or master’s degree. Grade Point Average (GPA) should correspond to a 2.5 or better on the German grading scale.

  • The prospective doctoral student must have a letter from the first supervisor confirming the academic supervision
  • Proof of qualification on the basis of an admission procedure
  • Please enclose the following documents with your application:
  • A statement of purpose (limited to 5000 characters). In your statement of purpose, please describe your qualifications, why you are motivated to study communication, academic interests, and future career plans.
  • Copy of transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate work.
  • A letter from the first supervisor confirming the academic supervision.
  • A dissertation proposal (approx. 15 pages). The proposal should include a review of relevant, current research and a timeline for executing the project.

The application deadline for the Winter Semester (WS) is September 15. The application deadline for the Summer Semester (SS) is March 15.

Admission procedure

Admission to the program largely depends on an evaluation of the applicant’s dissertation proposal and personal interview. After an applicant’s qualifications have been confirmed by the board of the GSCS, he or she will be accepted into the Ph.D. program if a place is available depending on their ranking.
