PhD Project: Design and synthesis of metallosupramolecular architectures using polycarbene ligands

Abstract of Research Project

Metallosupramolecular self-assembly, first reported by J.-M. Lehn on dinuclear helicates synthesized from 2,2'- bipyridine and Cu(I), today has become an attractive field of research. Thereafter, a large number of supramolecular self-assembled structures have been synthesized. These supramolecular structures can act as molecular hosts by encapsulating small guest molecules. However, metallosupramolecular structures derived from N-heterocyclic carbene ligands are very rare.

The objective of the present work is to synthesize a trigonal prism type metallosupramolecular assembly, using polymetallated carbene complex and organic linker having N- or C-donors.
