Online lecture on paradoxical phenomena in mathematics

Virtual edition of "Brücken in der Mathematik" on 29 September

The world – especially that of mathematics – is full of mysteries. Particularly interesting and exciting are those that yield unexpected results that run counter to our intuition. Such thougt experiments are the subject of the online lecture "Paradoxe Phänomene in der Mathematik" (Paradoxial phenomena in mathematics) to which the Cluster of Excellence Mathematics Münster at the University of Münster invites everyone who is interested. The lecture will be held in German. On Tuesday, September 29, at 7:30 pm, the livestream will start on the YouTube channel of the Cluster of Excellence.

Prof. Matthias Löwe from the Institute for Mathematical Stochastics and Prof. Martin Hils from the Institute for Mathematical Logic and Foundational Research will begin by introducing classical paradoxes, such as Epimenides, the Cretan's famous statement: "All Cretans lie". Providing an example of misguided intuition, the paradox of the three prisoners will then be examined in more detail - including a calculation with astonishing results. We will explore the world of infinite sets and its many paradoxical mathematical phenomena with examples such as "Hilbert's Hotel" providing many eureka momentes of unterstanding.

The event is part of the series "Brücken in der Mathematik" (Bridges in Mathematics). Due to the corona pandemic, the lecture cannot take place in the "Schloss" of Münster University as usual, but the show will go on as a livestream on the Cluster's YouTube channel. Questions from the audience will still be possible and welcome. Questions can be asked via live chat, e-mail and WhatsApp and the contact details will be displayed during the presentation.
