Research focus "Mathematics"
Mathematics is one of the central disciplines for scientific, economic and technological progress. New mathematical insights drive inner-mathematical research and often lead to unforeseen and surprising breakthroughs in other scientific fields. That is why it is essential to cultivate collaboration and contact between various mathematical disciplines.
The research focus on mathematics is one of the University's outstanding achievements. For decades, the theoretical mathematics department has produced world-class research. As a result of a strategic decision by the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science (FB 10), the applied mathematics department has also attained a leading position on the international stage in recent years. The strategic expansion of its research spectrum led to the creation of an innovative research partnership between theoretical and applied mathematicians. In conjunction with the cluster of excellence "Mathematics Münster. Dynamics – Geometry – Structures" and numerous Münster-based award-winning mathematicians, this partnership explores questions of fundamental importance with diverse interconnections – all in the name of scientific, economic and technological progress. In addition to their involvement in the "Cells in Motion Interfaculty Centre" and various DFG-funded collaborative research centres (CRCs), the mathematicians also participate in the "Graduate School of Evolution" and other interfaculty centres at the University of Münster. The aim is to further intensify cross-disciplinary collaboration in the future, particularly in the area of imaging and the nanosciences.
