New insights into the biogenesis of mitochondrial outer membrane proteins

Mitochondrial function relies heavily on the proper targeting and insertion of nuclear-encoded proteins into the outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM). Cytosolic chaperones maintain such newly synthesized OMM proteins in an import competent conformation while the membrane integration itself is facilitated by membrane embedded insertases. Our recent research provides new insights into the molecular mechanism of these processes and on the dual targeting of some OMM proteins to mitochondria and peroxisomes.
