Legal development without a monopoly on power. Thoughts on standardisation patterns

Workshop on the annual theme

Historically, for long periods of time, legal developments took place in the absence of a defined monopoly of power. While there was no dearth of power relations, these were not structured in such a manner that standardisations in the context of legislation and enforcement could have been organised without more. Nonetheless, tendencies of unification can be observed throughout time. At the workshop, we will discuss this using a range of examples and ask whether specific, non-dominating forms of unification can be observed in the respective legal orders.
