Virtual Private Network (VPN)

HELP This topic is an entry point into the subject "Virtual Private Network (VPN)". Therefore, it cannot be renamed.

Users of the communication networks of Muenster University need VPN if

  • They want unrestricted access to the net of Muenster University, but they cannot work in the University net directly (e.g. via LAN-ports).
  • They have access to a net, that is not part of the net of Muenster University and if this net has Internet access. This includes all the cases where Internet-Service-Providers (ISP) provide Internet access. It is also possible to use VPN from the nets of other universities, provided they have Internet access.
  • They have access to a net that is not directly part of the net of Muenster University, but that is directly connected to the University net. This includes certain nets in students’ residence halls.
  • They want to use certain ports in the computer networks of the university that are only intended for authenticated access and thus for VPN ("public university" ports, e.g. pLANet-ports). Such ports are clearly marked, e.g. in lecture halls and computer pools.

Setting up a VPN-access

When talking about VPN-accesses, we must distinguish between PPTP- and IPsec-based accesses. At the moment, we support both methods.
The ZIV recommends the use of the newer IPsec access by applying the Cisco-client.
