Notes about WLAN/Airport under Mac OS X

As of 18. December 2006

(from: http://qgp.uni-muenster.de/~sahlmul/wlan/WLANMacOSX.html)

This instruction refers to the configuration of the WLANs/Airport under version 10.4 (Tiger) of MacOS X. It only covers the Airport- or AirportExtreme –cards used by Apple. No special installation is necessary because the drivers have already been integrated in the operating system. Users of other cards should install the included driver software.

Normally MacOS X recognizes the wireless cell uni-ms automatically and the user only needs to choose it and enter his/her own password for network access. This is done via the Airport-symbol in the menu bar. First you must activate Airport, of course.

After choosing the wireless cell uni-ms, you will see another window, where you must enter user name and password for network access. As 802.1X-configuration, you can choose „automatic“.

If another window appears, because the server certificate could not be checked, you should click „continue“.

If the Airport-symbol is not listed in the menu bar, you must open the program „internet-connection”. You will find it in the file „programs“. Under „programs“, choose the item Airport. First choose the item “show Airport status in the menu bar”.

If the wireless cell has been recognized, it can be chosen directly.

You will also see a window, where you must enter your user name and the password for network access. As 802.1X-configuration, you can choose "automatic".

If the network cell does not appear, you are not within range of a transmitter, but you can also enter the name uni-ms directly via the item network->others. Please make sure to use WPA (Protection->company-wide WPA). This setting should also be checked in case of connection problems. Now you must enter your user name and the password for network access.

When you choose the network, your computer will automatically set up a connection with the wireless cell. The momentary signal strength and the ID of the main station will be shown. Furthermore, you will see status information in the bottom left side of the window.
