Programming in Perl

Content: The lecture introduces programming with Perl and deals with the basic properties of the language: syntax, data types, commands and functions. Further emphasis is placed on the handling of regular expressions, object-oriented programming and the use of popular modules (including CGI, DBI and Tk). As a scripting language, Perl offers a very simple introduction to programming and is also suitable for beginners.

Perl, the Practical Extraction and Report Language, is a free and platform-independent programming language that is particularly well suited for solving the day-to-day problems that application developers and system administrators have to deal with. Perl was originally a language for convenient editing of texts and files and therefore has a particularly powerful set of regular expressions for finding and modifying text passages. These regular expressions were adopted as Perl Compatible Regular Expressions (PCRE) in other programming languages such as Python, PHP, and Java. In its 25-year history, Perl has developed into a universal programming language. Perl is suitable for small scripts on the command line, for developing CGI scripts for web servers or for creating graphical user interfaces with GUI toolkits like Tk or Gtk. Organized over the Internet, there is a central library of freely available Perl modules that already offers solutions for many problems: Comprehensive Perl Archive Network (CPAN).
