Studies

There are no tuition fees for a doctoral program at a public German university such as the WWU. Students and doctoral students must merely pay semester fees. These fees amounted to about 300 Euros in the 2018/2019 winter semester. The exact amount as well as what it’s for can be found here (link in German).

The semester fees help finance various institutions that are maintained in the interest of both students and doctoral students – part of the fees are spent on the Student Support Services or the Student Union (link in German). The largest part of the fee, however, goes towards the payment of the so-called NRW-Ticket, with which students and doctoral students can use both the regional transport system and the local public transport systems in the entire state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Cost of living

The cost of living during a doctoral program in Münster is about 1.000 Euros per month (further information can be found here).
It is important to not only include in your calculation of costs of living not only rent and food, but also the costs for health insurance (link in German) which every doctoral student must have.

We have compiled information on sources of funding for your doctorate here.
