Stellenausschreibung

The Institute of Applied Physics at the University of Münster, Germany is now offering a three-year position for a

Postdoctoral Research Associate
Wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in
(salary level TV-L E13, 100%)

The regular working hours are currently 39 hours 50 minutes a week and the teaching obligation is 4 hours per week. All posts can, as a rule, also be filled as part-time positions if there are no compelling work-related reasons against doing so.

The position involves undertaking fundamental theoretical, experimental and application-oriented scientific and technological research on nonlinear optics (secondup to seventh-order effects) of temporal and spatial four-wave mixing for frequency and mode conversion, e.g. for biomedical applications within Raman microscopy.

Further information about the research area and available infrastructure can be obtained from Carsten Fallnich by phone (+ 49 251 833 6160) or by e-mail (fallnich@wwu.de) and general information on the work group's research can be found at www.opticaltechnologies.org.

Candidates are expected to show the potential for building-up a research sub-group within the Optical Technologies Group that will incorporate independent research, project applications to relevant funding institutions within national and international frameworks, teaching and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students, and development of new courses. They should already demonstrate the capacity to execute the proposed research and publish the  accompanying results in respected journals. Candidates are expected to have the interest and capability to successfully undertake a Habilitation during the period of employment. In the case of a fruitful collaboration, i.e. if all corresponding milestones are successfully completed, it will be possible to apply for a permanent position from mid-2023.

Requirements for the position are:

  • a doctorate in physics, photonics or electrical engineering or a comparable subject area, preferably followed by a postdoctoral stay abroad
  • proven knowledge and experience, as far as is possible, in, preferably, all of the following topics: generation and characterization of ultrashort laser pulses, experimental and theoretical nonlinear optics, and numerical modelling of the propagation of ultrashort laser pulses in scattering or structured nonlinear media
  • An exceptional willingness to perform and outstanding skills in relation to working independently, problem-solving and presenting results
  • Experience in project management, technical guidance, management of employees and securing third-party funding
  • A strong research profile in the relevant areas and ideas for innovative applications for third-party funding
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required, as is the willingness to acquire German in a timely fashion in order to commence teaching in the Bachelor's program

We offer:

  • Integration into a supportive team in the interdisciplinary research field of modern nonlinear optics and laser physics
  • Extensive modern laboratory equipment and access to high-performance grid and parallel computing facilities
  • Close cooperation with the MESA+- Institute of the University of Twente (Enschede, NL) and the Cluster of Excellence CiM, as well as other national and international partners from academia and industry
  • A stimulating environment with a high degree of independence and long-term prospects

The University of Münster is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to increasing the proportion of women academics. Consequently, we actively encourage applications by women. Female candidates with equivalent qualifications and academic achievements will be preferentially considered within the framework of the legal possibilities. The University of Münster is committed to employing more staff with disabilities. Candidates with recognised severe disabilities who have equivalent qualifications are preferentially considered, unless certain project-related reasons apply.

Please, send your application – including a short expose of your planned research – and the usual documents (cover letter, CV, copies of degree certificates, a list of publications, PhD thesis etc.) – by e-mail in a maximum of two PDF files to fallnich@wwu.de by the 9 January 2021. Please use "Post-Doc 09/2020" as the subject line.
