Cross-Cultural Pragmatics

This project, which was started in 1998, deals with cross-cultural aspects of speech act realization, in both native and non-native discourse. In particular, the phenomenon of politeness, and its realization in various speech acts across cultures, is examined. Languages investigated (both as L1 and L2) are English, Dutch, German, French, and Spanish. Data are collected through the use of Discourse Completion Tests.
