Teil - Ganzes Beziehungen in der Objekterkennung

A central assumption of structural description models is that objects are represented as relations of parts, mapped in an object centered coordinate system. However, a major claim of this approach, namely the viewpoint independent recognition of object parts, has been disproved in various studies (Tarr et al. 1998 Nature Neuroscience 1:275-277). Further, the vast amount of evidence for view dependend feature and object coding let computational models, which handle object recognition as view based and mediated by extrapolation between a limited number of stored sample views, appear more attractive than the structural description approach (Tarr and Bülthoff 1998 Cognition 67:1-20).In various experiments we address the question whether part-whole relations are major determinants of object recognition and stress the role of the spatial relations of image parts in human object recognition.
