Multiphase diffusion in the system Al-Mg

Diffusion couples between Al and Mg were investigated to study the formation, composition and growth of intermetallic phases in the Al-Mg system. Layers of the intermetallic compounds Al3Mg2 and Al12Mg17 were observed by optical microscopy. Composition-depth-curves of the diffusion zone were determined by electron microprobe analysis after annealing at various times and temperatures. The solid-solid phase equilibria of the Al-Mg system were redetermined between 604 and 706 K. Parabolic growth of both phases was observed in the whole temperature range. The growth of Al3Mg2 is faster than that of Al12Mg17 by about one order of magnitude. The pertaining activation enthalpies are 69 and 165 kJ mol-1.
