Towards a better management of endangered mangrove estuarines

Mangrove areas next to big harbour cities like Durban at the east coast of South Africa are highly threatened by air and water pollution. The mangrove nature reserve in the Umgeni estuarine is additionally subjected to long lasting fresh water floodings. It was the aim of our study to show what effects a prolonged waterlogging situation might have on the performance of the mangrove tree Avicennia marina. A first report deals with short term floodings which were shown not to lower the vigour of Avicennia.
