Gas exchange features of tuberous legumes

It is well documented for a couple of legumes that nodulation occurs about 30 days after plants have been inoculated with Bradyrhizobium. Productivity of already nodulated leguminous plants is much higher than of plants without nodules. However, when seeds are inoculated and plants are raised from infested and noninfested seeds it appears that growth of plants from infested seeds lacks considerably behind that from noninfested seeds. We concentrated on these early stages of development and the process of nodulation and could show that CO2-gas exchange and electron transport through PS II was significantly lower in tuberous legumes during nodulation.
